A
mystery silver medal
A day I will never forget!
by Toddy
It was on a drizzly december morning sam and I went out to detect
one of the feilds I had researched next to a medieval village that
no longer exsists all that remains is an old graveyard but having
done the research Its amazing to know some of the things that went
on back in the 13th centuary, we where trying out a new field as
the one we had been searching the last month or so seemed to have
dried up of finds so on we went after the usual cuppa rosie lee!the
field was stubble and it was quite soft half an hour not a beep
another half an hour the same so we decided to go back to the dried
up field whitch had turned up a hammered groat 1440, Edward 1 penny
bodles, turners, stirlings and other medieval artifacts, I was glad
as this field never let us down Jimmy, Hugh were'nt comming this
week so of we went after another cuppa and a fag!! as we had been
all over this field and it was difficult ground i.e iron or minerilised
I was in AUTO on the SOV XS2 PRO we decided to work up and down
the field bang! the sov gave a signal I dug down saying to myself
how could someone miss that I lifted the earth and at first I thought
I had found a religous medal (modern) then I seen a bust I thought
it was a red Indian at first and then I turned it round I could
not believe it (as Victor would say!) C.R II with a crown above
it it was a silver medal of Charles II in mint condition I was stunned
to say the leas I went over to Sam and said you will never believe
what I have found and he said "HAMMERED" I said nope better
I showed him and he just looked at me and said I have never seen
anything like "its minted" .I reported it to the farmer
and then to the Hunterian museum in Glasgow and after a year it
is in Falkirk museum an UNRECORDED SCOTTISH SILVER MEDAL 1640-50
who would have thought a one of a kind and it just shows you don't
know what the next signal is ..IF IN DOUBT DIG IT OUT!!
p.s The picture dosn't do it justice that is an xray from the museum
