Safety
First
In pursuing any hobby there are common sense safety tips that it's
wise to observe and this is true of treasure hunting. Do carry a
waterproof first aid kit that's easy to open. Study its contents
before you need them, so you'll be prepared to use them in an emergency.
Be sure that kit includes your name, address, and telephone number
as well as your doctor's name and number.
Wear suitable clothing that will keep you warm on cool days and
cool on warm days. Beach and surf areas are full of broken glass
and sharp metal. Always wear protective shoes both in and out of
the water.
Wear a sunscreen with an SPF number of 15 or higher and reapply
it often if you're in the sunshine and if you're in and out of the
water. Sun rays can damage even on a cloudy day.
Stop hunting before you're exhausted. Sometimes you'll get so
caught up in what you're finding or seeking that you may not realize
you're expending too much energy. Don't become overtired. If you're
working in the sun and heat, keep a canteen of water with you to
prevent dehydration. Take a drink frequently. Keep physically fit.
When you're working in an isolated or unfamiliar area, try to go
with a partner. If this isn't possible, be alert to your surroundings
and to danger. I don't view every stranger who approaches me as
a potential serial killer.
If you were ever a boy scout or girl scout as a child you'll remember
the motto BE PREPARED. It's an excellent motto for treasure
hunters, too.
