I was detecting with my friend on my
site and he found a hammered silver and I found a Roman coin just
before it started raining. He uses a XLT and I use the xs but not
fully in control yet. I used Tony's programme and modified it as
he recommended for coins and I added Jewellery. It worked well,
but I am wondering if there is a programme for hammered silver?
I am at present collecting programmes and placing them in a folder
so I can experiment. Thanks in anticipation Andrew

these are the settings me and jkxs use, found a hoard of hammered
gold and silver with these so they must work!! volume 10, gain 7,
threshold 7, tone threshold 10, variability 6, limits 8, limits
8, sounds ferrous, response audio 1, recovery deep, sensivity manual
20+, set up same as tony, accept all and reject nails i also edited
a thin black band to the left equivalent to maybe iron mask -11.
this is noisy on busy sites, but it works

For what it's worth I reckon the Explorer is one of the most
forgiving machines around and you'd have to go out of your way to
put in a bad program. If you are using the Explorer on a field with
night soil in, Big Tony's program would drive you round the bend,
however if you are on nice and quiet pasture or a fairly clean site
then it takes a bit of beating. I have made some modifications and
generally use the detector in iron mask -10 with the gain at about
8 (DEEP). I have found wafer thin Liz 1st 'three farthing' hammered
with my settings and a tiny, tiny unidentified hammered that is
still with a coin expert for ID. Remember that gain is just a pre
amp stage and the higher it gets turned up the less differentiation
there is between large and small targets. I like the gain high as
it gives me confidence, I also like AUDIO 3 cos it detects stuff
on the very edge of the coil and you get a 'looooooonger' signal.
It's useful when you are beginning to get bored and are maybe swinging...

Andrew, what Russ is telling you is right mate. Keep it simple.
The more buttons you press and programmes you try and devise to
shut out certain things the less you will find. Audio 1,2,3 and
normal are purely personal really to suit your hearing. Like he
says im a dildo when it comes to using 3. Its horrible and takes
some getting used to. Dont tell him, but I do use it on the quiet
sometimes, lol. I nearly always go back to Normal Audio, It just
suits me. Our paul has found masses more hammered than I have, hes
got a very good ear for those tiny signals. He swears by those settings
of ours and wont use anything else but normal Audio, its down to
you. At the end of the day if you aint over the hammered you aint
in with a chance of finding them.

Andrew mate, there are no 'special' programmes for the XS... There
are settings that are available for all to alter as and when the
ground conditions dictate. If you use smart screen with iron mask
at say -15 you'll find as much, if not more than you would if you
use an added program. The more of the smart screen is open the more
targets will be picked out, so, if you use a program that has been
edited to except only silver hammered, you'll discriminate out any
gold ones and most bronze coins too.. I would suggest learning how
and what each setting does, things like GAIN and SENSITIVITY are
important.....things like AUDIO 1 and AUDIO 3 are less important
and more personal choice..Some, including Tony cant handle AUDIO
3 because the extra noises confuse, in reality the extra noise should
be looked upon as extra information....It aint a magic wand, it's
a piece of hardware that'll find the gear. It's up to the user to
understand and learn how to use it.
