Here goes...Carry 2 or 3 short wooden stakes with you. When you get
a find, peg it. Could help to spot a pattern of finds in the field.
Even better, get GPS. I use it to record position of finds. This can
be taken back and uploaded to a map on the PC. Not cheap, @ £125.
Carry some clear plastic bags and an indellible marker. Bag your find
and record the details with the marker. Finally, never make a snap
field decision. The other day I received a good clear signal from
what looked like a piece of rock. I decided that's what it was and
chucked it. Now I am left wondering, was it an ore of some sort, or
was it a heavily encrusted artefact? If in doubt, take it home...you
can always bin it if it's rubbish! Now I've got to go back and find
that damned piece of "rock" again!!!! Hope this helps!

Cover the meter box in cling film to prevent water getting in.

I place duck tape over the speaker grille and then put on the control
box cover, Theres not a lot of moisture that will get in after that.
If you get one of the coffee jars that has a glass push fit lid
you can remove the polythene seal then cut out a polythene washer.
Place the home made washer next to one of the black washers on the
nylon coil bolt and this will stop the coil from 'flopping'.

Many of us feel we have a performance piece of kit in our hands
when we go detecting so we should treat it with respect or it will
bite us back and make our lives more differcalt, much like driving
a car. Slow down when conditions dictate, reduce sensertivity and
the gain so as to maintain stable conditions ie. A smooth ride to
that pot of gold ( performance cars are not driven flat out all
the time).

Heres one specifically for you Gary, when detecting in the winter
.... don't eat the yellow snow!!!

Frank Zapper fan eh....Dont you go where huskies go...dont
you eat that yellow snow.....Did you know, that man Frank called
his son 'Moon unit one'......cheers dad!! 1/Clean your detector
well then spray it with cockpit spray (armour all) find it in halfords
or car shops. It stops the mud sticking so tight and makes it easier
to clean thereafter... 2/ Get your shovel or spade adapted by having
a foot-rest welded to the top..I ruined an expensive pair of Berghaus
boots, the sharp edges cut through the sole in no time. 3/Go detecting
with somebody who takes loads of cakes and sandwiches on each outing.
4/ A usefull piece of kit is my finds bag. I use a hikers waist
bag (millets) comes complete with 2 drinks bottles so no more dehydrating
or trying to fit pop bottles in your pocket.

I prefer 'Back to Black' for spraying machine and coil. Its clear
silicon, protects rubber and is so slippy that if you have trouble
with waves washing over your coil it will minimise it. Car innertube
slice round the coil means you bounch off the rocks rather than
gaining chips. If you have a really tight coil when you do get it
off stick some tape in sticking up so that next time you have something
to pull with. Last, most important get that new machine out to your
test bed and make a note of depths on a stock or minimum discrim.
setting. Then if in the future performance seems 'iffy' you can
check if its the machine thats failing not your abilities or sites.

When using a sovereign it will detect deeper with the sensitivty
at minimum than if you put it in auto. The difference between auto
and minimum is quite dramatic.
