Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
I want to let you know the diagram Minelab has showing the photo of the connector has the pin connections labeled incorrect. I have edited the photo below to show the correct connection points. I have the correct connector(actually a plastic version and a full stainless version)and it is an m12 8-pin male connector. Next week when I get some time I will try to take the time and post some pics showing the connections while I am building a set of the Gray Ghost Underwater Headphones if anyone would be interested... bare with me though as I also run a small family business and twin 8 yr. old boys so I will have to do it when I can find the time....If some of you are already researching it for yourself, I hope this helps you....
I forgot to add when searching for the m12 8-pin connector make sure it is ip67 or ip68 rated.

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
You found the connector? Cool,I've looked around but not having a CTX here I had to rely on whatever pics where posted.
Wasn't sure which one would work in it. Did think that once found, that with some work anyone can make or modify other headsets.
I was going to suggest someone to get a Y connector on some waterproof headphones/earbuds, so you can have both the standard end and the waterproof plug. Best of both worlds in one headset.
Do you have a link to the connector?

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
hi SYKO, I actually received the connector from a friend. He told me all you have to do is search google for m12 8 pin male field serviceable connector with ip67 or ip68 rating.

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
I have checked my waterproof headphones and the headphone module... the image shows my findings. The waterproof headphones seem to be wired up (anticlockwise from slot) Tip, Sleeve, Ring.... but on my meter I don't get any reading to the first pin, and I can see a resister connected to the third pin that should be ring...... so I think I will stick with the headphone module wiring on my headphones.
What's interesting is that only three of the eight pins do anything (as far as I can see).

So you have confirmed what was stated in the first picture. Thanks
It looks like Minelab put the diagram for the plug end rather than the socket end. lol
At least it has been identified and confirmed.
Thanks bigboar and Gordon.

Would you recommend to use that one Gordon if it is only IP67 rated?
Strange is that on the data sheet the female connector parts are IP67 /IP68 Rated and the male connector on cable is only IP68.
What do you think?

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
IP68 is better than IP67 but looking at the specs,IP67 should work to match the CTX specs.
The first number is for solid particle protection:
"The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects."
6 means = Dust tight No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (highest level)
************************************************** *****************************
The second digit is for Liquid ingress protection:
7 Immersion up to 1 m Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Test duration: 30 minutes
Immersion at depth of 1m (This is one level below the maximum protection...)
************************************************** *****************************
8 Immersion beyond 1 m The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. Normally, this will mean that the equipment is hermetically sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects.
Test duration: continuous immersion in water
Depth specified by manufacturer (Maximum protection)

So if you want to feel better get IP68, if not IP67 should be good enough for this application.

thanks for the very useful info!

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
Got the leads from Farnell, but they don't fit very easily so I would avoid.

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
Farnell's lead does fit, very tight though... here it is fitted to some headphones.
Speakers from an old set of UR30's, fitted into a good set of ear-defenders (same as Gray Ghost but in black) Leatherette ear muffs.... total cost without speakers, under £30.
The only problem is the straight lead is a bit short if you want to put down the detector.

So this a very cheap way of getting usable headphones for wading.
Wiring is Black (tip) to one side of the speakers.... and then join Blue and White together (to silence the speaker) and then connect to other side of speaker.
The diagram below on the right show the wiring, but ignore the colours as this image was used in an earlier post.

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
Any one with Gray Ghost NDTs should be able to make up a lead with these straight cables.... i just made three and they work. You just need the female plug Mini TA3F.... they are very tight and you need to open up the cable end, but they work.
Any one want one of my cables, £10 +p&p.

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
Gordon, when you made up those headphones above using the old set of UR30's, did you do anything to them to make them waterproof like the Excals that are encased in silicone or whatever that is?
I suspect that you just threw them in as is and plan to just keep them out of the water.
With some headphones modified to use that mini plug, you guys can use the same phones and just swap out the lead. When it's going into the water you plug in the waterproof connector. Ready for the WM10,plug in the 1/4" jack with the mini plug.
Easier to carry 2 leads than 2 headphones(cheaper too)

No, these are purely for wading, the headphones are not waterproof.
Yes two leads solves the problem for wading.... and if you have NDT's this becomes very easy.
I wonder if Detector Pro have any plans to sell them?

Re: Anybody thinking about D.I.Y. waterproof headphones.....
sorry it took so long everybody but here is a video I made showing how to wire your G.G. underwater headphones for your ctx. I am sorry for the poor quality, all I had was my phone camera and one of my sons helping. I didnt end up taking video when I did the epoxy as it was to difficult to hold and work at the same time and my helper decided he wanted to play some basketball. LOL
