Giant Pigeon in the Corfe Woodland?

I have a question about metal detecting and woodland? Where we can go, do we need permission if yes from who - I know landowner, but how to find who he is? Private or Council? Due to lack of land (nearest farm is 130 miles from my place) I would be more than happy to make a trip to forests around London, but don't want any trouble
. Any advice is more then welcome.
    Thx

    Re: Forest?

I couldn't possibly comment on the sex starved pigeons..all the ones around here seeming to be shagging like mad...

...as to the forests of London...I've done a lot of looking for coins under the trash and used condoms (sigh) that litter the back paths of the woods on the commons in my area. Found a hell of a lot of late Victorian/George V era coppers...few silvers...few rings....modern coins...

Impossible to get permission off any of the councils...they all state "health and safety" as a reason these days and zzzzz. I suppose there are some buggers that would leave big, ankle bending size holes about if they gave permission though. I've never been hassled for hunting about the back paths, but I always felt uncomfortable, waiting for a tap on the shoulder by some jobsworth from the council. Probably a ground less fear.

There's an old timer out on the big common near me a lot looking for WW2 stuff...no one seems to bother him.

I'd say just be circumspect. Make sure you're on council land (it's our damn public land anyway) and not private land before you go anywhere and take away the trash you dig up and fill in those holes. .

    Re: Forest?

There are reports of detectorists going into a forest and have never been seen again. Dark, cold, damp feeling places.
