    PMR's

    Just for John

Thought I'd treat myself to a pair of PMR's, great for keeping in touch with your m8's when out tecting, keeping check on the kids when out shopping etc. Basically they are a short range ( up to 3km ) walkie talkie - operating on 446 Mhz you get 8 channels x 38 sub channels for comms.

I ordered mine on the net yesterday afternoon, and they arrived this morning - hows that for service!

These are the folk I bought from http://www.twoway-radio.co.uk/trolleyed/27/index.htm

darkblue I have had mine for 2 years we as a family use them in Winchester or other towns when it Christmas shopping time so we don't lose earch other. They are great I also use them on Digs as I will be doing just that on Sunday to keep up to date with the other site officer & the rest of the members who have them... If your thinking of getting some make sure you look at how for the go 5 km is the norm they are very good ones without spending lots of €€€€€'s or ££££'s or $$$$'s on them
Any one who knows me well will know as soon as a Tv Camera is a round you will see me in front of it

I have seen some over here at €69 and their range is 5km and they look quite good made by Motorola, i will wait a few more weeks and see if the price goes down again(winter time).
Might be worth the investment instead of running across a huge field to see what the other guy has found!!
Thanks for the info though very helpfull.

Tony, its not the range that is the legal limit with these radios, it's the output power which is limited to 500mw, but due to better antenna design some models now boast better range

Hi Mike, over here we call them CB radio's i have a 40 channel Uniden UHF range is 3km, we use them when a few of us get togather we use a hands free attachement, you put the earpiece inside your headphones and to talk you have a button near your chest to talk into, they are also great when you travell in more then one car so you can keep in touch, they also beat shouting to one another you just talk normal and the other guys who have got them can hear you and all the other people who are in the area don't know what you are saying. Cheers Raoul

What does PMR stand for? I'm not familiar with this term.
I think it's what we here call GMRS for General Marine Radio Service. These compact little babes sell for less than $100 and are available to broadcast up to 26 kms. and have typically 22 channels and 38 subs.
The CB's are losing their popularity. Most are too big/heavy by comparison though many are still used in recreational vehicles. Many of the long distance truckers used to use them but have now converted over to VHF units which, I think, now require a licence.

As stated 500mw is the max legal output, now if you had one with 5 watts output, your range is now more like 30 miles or more!!!!!!!!

Nah, I can run 5 watts out of all my handheld radios on 2 mtrs no worries ( they're all designed to do it ), can open the local repeater 25 miles away.

It's just a shame my license won't allow me to use them on 446, can use them on 70 cm 430 Mhz. If everyone got licensed we could all have very long range comms.

can you not just take a chance and use them with a 5 watt amplifier and no licence, cant see the harm in that. used to to it with a 100 watt burner on CB years ago

Don't think Ofcom would see it that way, as a full licence holder, I had to do 3 exams involving a shed load of maths and blurb, I could and would
( if caught ) have all my radio equipment taken, and end up losing £3-£4k.

Not worth the risk for me, can't even use my radios on 27Mhz ( cb ), I would have to use a dedicated cb ( 4w ) restricted set....bummer

I can use up to 400 watts on my licence, but aint got an antenna that will take more than 250 watts, still plenty to talk all over the world though.

We used to use the PMR's when we used to fly, saves using the dedicated air frequencies. I could talk to other pilots about 10 miles away with our Motorolla sets. But saying that we had line of sight with no obstacles, so distance was a bit easier, plus we could pick up hikers and the odd detectorist using them in the fields below
