FIRST PLATINUM RING
Found my first platinum ring yesterday. The FE-CO reading in the low tide zone was around 01-17 to 01-22. I was sure it was aluminum trash, but dug it anyway. I later dug the top part of a glass bottle with an aluminum ring. Both the platinum ring and the aluminum ring had a similar sound.
In the past, I searched the Internet for any information about platinum jewelry values for the E-trac, but was unsuccessful. The only source of information that I could find was from Andy Sabisch’s book “The Minelab Explorer & E-trac Handbook”. On page 126, a platinum cocktail ring FE-CO is 12-02, so I assumed all platinum jewelry would have very low conductive values.
This 10g platinum ring air tested at a solid 12-15. Estimate density of 21g/cu. cm. The “PLAT” stamped on the inside of the ring is worn, and the outside is scratched and pitted from being in the surf zone, probably for a few decades. Also found a 14k ring.
Jewelry numbers are left to right in the photo.
ID = inner diameter (in millimeters)
Procoil auto-sensitivity = 16
# carat--ID----grams---depth/CO---max depth
1 14k----20.5---2.56----4" 12-12-----8”
2 plat----19----10.09----4" 12-15-----7”
