    GPX5000 setting

I Have a GPX5000 and would love to hear from all you other GPX5000 users with your settings to compare notes.

There seams to be loads of discussion and videos on the settings for use the other side of the pond but struggling to hear the views and reviews from the UK users.

Be nice to hear some more from Minelab them self!

    Re: GPX5000 setting

My setting change all the time depending on what the site is like. These are the settings I use on a good Roman site with well rotted iron targets, and the standard coil.

    Front end cap.

    Search Mode: General

    Soil/Timings: Special

    Coil/RX DD

    Ground Balance Fixed
    =========================

    Main Menu

    Backlight OFF

    Battery Test Full charge

    Volume limit 12

    GB Type GEN

    Special Fine Gold

Manual Tune I prefer a setting between 90 to 110

    Search Mode General

    Motion Slow

    RX Gain 16

    Audio Normal

    Audio Tone 30

    Stabilizer 8

    Signal 19

    Target Volume 12

    Response Normal

    Tracking Medium

    Iron Reject 6

Minelab don't recommend Fine Gold timings to be used with a DD coil, however I'm getting better discrimination using this setup. Sure the depth is greater using the Normal timings, but I get better usability in iron areas in Fine gold.

Gordon - for your settings above what would you recommend for the GPX4800 instead of "Fine Gold"? It's also interesting to see both you and Neil opt for the Manual Tune rather than the Auto Tune!! and in the lower band rather than upper. I might give this a go when I'm out next...... whenever that is????

Very interesting iron heart thanks, i will definitely be giving that a try!

It's a real toss up wether I should be mucking around with the setting try to find ones that suit me or should I just stick to the one? But right now I find it so frustrating, when I know I have a machine the XP Deus in the back or the van that I know inside out and get good results from. It it wasn't for the cost I would have given up.

    Re: GPX5000 setting

Don't give up, keep plugging away and eventually it will click. It took me a good few months to suss out my 4800 and I can honestly say hand on heart that if I walk over anything non-ferrous I will find it. Confidence is a BIG thing - to help with this I have exclusively used my GPX and sidelined my SE for nearly a year now. No point in faffing about with two detectors when you should be concentrating on one! I've had a reasonable years detecting, unfortunately most of it spent on new 'unproductive' land, but you have to try these places eh?

I'm sure i already replied to this.... Must be losing it.

Enhanced is very similar to Fine Gold timings.

Don`t give up. Its a different beast to any other detector. Its as much about getting your ears & head tuned in as anything else. And (before anyone says anything) putting the right coil on!
Once you get around listening for the signal break from iron you`ll be over halfway. My setttings are very similar to Gordon`s with slight tweaks depending on the site ground conditions.

Thanks people I will keep plugging away after changing to fine gold!

Lots! But it will be usable in iron.... "Coin and Relic" should only be used in totally benign soils with little iron... I tend to only use it on the beach.

Switch to Normal or sensitive extra timings when you know your in a good area, or when you want to unleash the true power.

I went out today a mate with his deus and hand on heart I was getting him to check most signals that I got and I dug a possible roman broach at 8" that his deus had zero signal. I was surpriced as it wasn't that deep.

    Gave me a boost!

    Re: GPX5000 setting

Well done Its in the same way that I have gained confidence with mine, as I said to you a few weeks back you'll detect less ground and still recover more targets than someone else in the same field even if your only just getting used to it and they have a few years under their belt with their machine.
Stick at it and give me a bell if you get a bad back from digging and ill pop over and remove the deeper target free of charge LOL

    Re: GPX5000 setting

Well I have been putting in the hours, these new settings are so much easier, still seam to be digging large targets (flat iron, horse shoes etc). but gaining the confidence not.

The garrett pro pointer 100% interferes with it though, going to make a shielded holster for it today.

Thanks jammydodger while you up here though got some trees that need a haircut!

    Re: GPX5000 setting

You will get better as time goes on Homested, its a good discriminator once you get used to the sounds, even the deep iron gets easier its just getting the usage hours in and you have to persevere, the depth still shocks me now, but its not just the depth as you will find out

Why Waste time using an ordinary detector when you have the option to use a GPX4800.

    Re: GPX5000 setting

Neils right. It's not all about depth. As a matter of fact on most fields I opt to dig the shallower louder signals rather than the 'whispers'. Reason being I don't want to spend all my time digging 2' deep holes all the time!. The GPX is a fantastic machine for small shallow targets and for those targets that other machines miss or read as iron. I don't know if you saw my post the other day when I found a Celtic Potin coin on a field that has been hammered to death for over 20 years. It wasn't just the fact I found a cracking coin - it was the fact that with the GPX I found a pocket FULL of non-ferrous items that others had missed for one reason or another? and that's what it's all about...... finding non-ferrous metal objects in the hope that one or two are 'keepers' The big learning curve is sussing the iron. It took me a while but now I have no problems, admittedly, occasionally I do get what I consider a good signal only to discover with the first turn of soil that it's iron but I can live with that.
