Discrimination
#1 One of the first questions that get asked about this machine
is if it will be able to discriminate pull tabs from gold rings.
The answer might not be that easy. First of all keep in mind two
different things. One is that the Explorer looks at a target two
different ways It looks at the targets conductivity as do most other
VLF detectors we are use to using AND it looks at the ferrous properties
of the target. This gives us another "dimension" to evaluate
the target with which we have never had before. The second thing
to keep in mind is that the Explorer has the capability to "notch"
or "discriminate" tighter than any other detector we have
used before. Between those two things, once you have mastered them,
the Minelab explorer has the CAPABILITY to be able to discriminate
MOST common pull tabs while still picking up MOST gold rings and
pendants.
#2 Here is a quick hint for all of you that are out there trying
to "teach" the machine to discriminate pull tabs and still
pick up gold and nickels. When you are in the learn mode ensure
that you are using the SMALL cursor. If you use the medium or large
you will find that you will loose all your nickels and lot of your
gold rings when you discriminate out your tabs but this will not
happen if you teach it with the small cursor. BUT, if you attempt
to discriminate ALL the different pull tabs you have found you will
find that you will loose gold and nickels regardless. Best thing
to do is to just discriminate 2 or 3 of the most common tabs that
you are finding in that particular area.
